The Black Ascot Audible Audio Edition Charles Todd Simon Prebble HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • I'd rather gone off the Charles Todd's novels. They have the "Bess Crawford" series and the "Inspector Rutledge" series, and both seemed to lose their ooopth a few books back. It was as if the authors had lost interest in their characters and the books were basically written by rote and published on a yearly basis. However, I decided to read this year's new book, "The Black Ascot Inspector Ian Rutledge Mysteries Book 21", and I was quite pleased.

The book takes place in a dual time period; 1910 and 1921. King Edward died in 1910. . He had ruled since the death of his mother, Queen Victoria, in 1901. The Ascot Races that year were called "The Black Ascot" as the mourning for the King;s death dictated the wearing of black to the races. Another death, in an automobile accident also occurred that year. Blanche Fletcher-Munro was killed, her husband was badly injured, Was the death an accident or a murder, with the Fletcher-Munro's car having been tampered with? And if it was murder, who was the intended victim? A second man, Alan Barrington, was sought for questioning, but he went on the lam. (Think a bit of the Lord Lucan case in the 1970's). "Where is Alan Barrington?" is the hue and cry throughout England.

Eleven years - as well as The Great War - have passed and the Alan Barrington case was moved to the Scotland Yard "cold case" file. In 1921, Ian Rutledge, in his return from war service, has rejoined the Yard and is assigned to review the case. He had met a man who claims to have seen Alan Barrington, both in England...and of late.

The Todds - mother and son - seem to have regained their interest in Ian Rutledge (and the ever present Hamish MacLeod). The book is well written and is evocative of the post-war years. He's still haunted by his war years and how that worry has affected his official duties. He still hasn't met a partner and I'm holding out hope that he meets Bess Crawford through her cousin Melinda and they elope together into the combined Charles Todd series world. Now, that would be a great book to read!
  • This is the 21st story in the Inspector Ian Rutledge series and I've been right there for each of them. Even though I liked this story (because I'm inclined to like the work of this writing team and I especially like this main character) there were a lot of times when Rutledge "imagined" that some circumstance might have happened and from there on it became an established piece of evidence. When the plot is a little thin for one of these Rutledge novels that kind of thing seems to happen often. This is another story where Rutledge drives f.o.r.e.v.e.r between one town, city or village and another picking up minute clues before he's on the road again to find the next totally obscure fact that miraculously presents itself. That formula is used more often than I like.

Having read the first paragraph of this review you probably wonder why I continue to read the series and then criticize this book. Well, because with twenty-one stories in the series there are going to be plots that are better than others - that's just a fact. I found this one weak as to plotting but strong as to character growth. Rutledge suffers from shell shock from his time in France during the war. At this time shell shock was synonymous with cowardice so Rutledge must keep his condition hidden from everyone. If his condition were to become known he would not be allowed to continue his career with Scotland Yard. His career with Scotland Yard is what is helping him cope with and heal from his shell shock. These novels are always about Rutledge performing his job with his high standards while continuing to heal from his condition. This is a fictional character I've come to care about so if a plot of a specific book is a little thin I will still find enjoyment in watching the interaction of Rutledge and Hamish and wonder how long this secret can remain hidden. I was worried that this story was going to be the time when it all fell apart. I had even begun to think about what work Rutledge and Hamish could do away from the Yard. Whew, this was a close one.
  • I have read the Rutledge series with a great deal of enjoyment and some few disappointments. The recent addition of “The Black Ascot’ was one of the best in the series IMO. It had tight pacing, a logical premise once it was pasted back together and Malinda Crawford...I do enjoy her acerbic character and intelligence. A book of HER adventures would be a welcome addition to the Todds’ compilation.

While I admit I had accurate suspicions about the suspect Rutledge discerned, the method getting to that conclusion involved plausible suspects along the way... I was sorry when I finished it in just one day (taking care of someone left time to read)—
    It was a compelling journey...
  • I have read all the books in this series and was worried the authors (a mother and son duet) were getting tired of the character, but this book has breathed new life into the series. The main character, Inspector Ian Rutledge is given information about a 10 year old unsolved murder case and the main suspect has been seen in Britain recently. There are a number of twist, turns and false stories to keep you guessing until the end. As always there are false leads and people lying, as well as people trying to stop him from finding the truth. Along the way Ian starts to worry about his mental state, but must push forward to solve the case and keep his sanity. He is a WWI shell stock survivor who carries the memory of a dead soldier (Hamish) in his head like a living person as his coping system. There are a number of details and characters that are from other books in the series, but that won't stop you from enjoying this story if you are new to the series. I found the story very satisfying and am now looking forward to next year's book.

The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books Christopher Columbus His Son and the Quest to Build the World Greatest Library Edward WilsonLee 9781982111397 Books Reviews

  • This is an extensively researched book about the life of Hernando Colon, son of Christopher Columbus, and the Biblioteca Colombina he created in 1539. Prior to his death Hernando collected between 10,000 and 20,000 items for his library, including over 3000 books. His library was organized using a system he created for it and was the first library to use bookshelves where the books were shelved vertically. He collected any paper object that struck his fancy, including playing cards and lyrics to songs.

This was a fascinating read about one man’s bibliomania and his desire to collect every book on every subject. It is well written and doesn’t get overly bogged down in the author’s research.
  • This book is delicious. There's no other way to put it. It is a delightful romp through Renaissance Europe, highlighting Hernando Colon's book buying trips in various places. It is a fantasy for any bibliophile, to have the freedom and resources to travel and build one's own library at the same time. An intellectual feast not to be missed!
  • I now have a special place in my heart for Hernando Colón. His collections and organizational systems are totally mind-boggling and absolutely fascinating. As a "natural son" (not the product of a legitimate union) Colón could "win legitimacy only by showing himself to be his father's son in spirit." Colón strove to achieve this distinction by accumulating massive amounts of written works, printed images, music, and plants to create a collection that would far surpass any other collection of its time. Colón also kept meticulous details in multiple ledgers and created complex organizational systems. This book dives into some of Colón's collections, examines particular items in the collection, offers insight into why some items were especially important to Colón and analyzes why some were never discussed by the collector.

This book is very dense and I wouldn't recommend it to the average book lover but if you're ready to go on a deep dig then this is the book for you!
  • One easily forgets what happened during the late Renaissance or sixteenth century. So many things were happening in Western Europe and the Americas and this book brings them together, beautifully. Not only did Columbus make his voyages to America but St. Peter's was being built and the Sistine Chapel ceiling was being painted by Michelangelo. Luther Nailed his 95 theses to the door of the Witternberg Cathedral and the recently invented printing press was turning out books and pamphlets galore. In the midst of this time, Hernando Colon, Christopher's illegitimate son, was living and travelling in the midst of these things and collecting thousands of books which were eventually brought to Sevilla for his library.

This was truly the first information age and Hernando attempted to "googlize" it.

Also interesting to me is how many of the names of the first families of Spain have continued for the last 500 years..
  • I was intrigued--Columbus had a son who created the world's greatest library? Why hadn't we heard about him? What happened to all the books? How did he even embark on such a quest? I had to read this book.

Hernando may have been an illegitimate son but in 1502 his father Christopher Columbus took the thirteen-year-old along on his fourth voyage to the New World. Hernando started his life familiar with lands and cultures that most of the world didn't even know existed.

The book recounts Columbus's discoveries and his struggle to maintain his status and share of New World wealth for his heirs.

The Admiral of the Ocean reigned as the greatest explorer for only a short time before he was dethroned. He became old news as successive explorers stole attention and acclaim. Spain sought to discredit Columbus as the first to discover the New World, desirous of keeping all the New World wealth. Hernando determined to return and solidify his father's status by writing a book about his father's life--essentially the first biography.

The other part of the book is Hernando's thirst for knowledge, his obsession with collecting books of every kind, in every language--even if he couldn't read them. He collected prints and maps and art and ephemera gleaned from small booksellers.

He kept lists of his books and when he lost over a thousand books in a shipwreck he knew which ones he needed to replace. He developed methods to catalog and organize the books and to retrieve the information in the books.

Hernando was called upon to create a definitive map of the New World so that Spain and Portugal could finalize their territorial rights. He began an exhaustive dictionary but abandoned it knowing he could never finish it.

As he traveled across Europe, Hernando came into contact with all the great thinkers whose ideas were rocking the world Erasmus, Luther, Rabelais, Thomas More. During Hernando's lifetime, Henry was looking to divorce Catherine, Suleiman was conquering the Eastern reaches of Europe, and the Holy Roman Emperor was crowned as the head of church and state. Luther's teaching had fueled the Peasant's Revolt and the anti-authoritarian Anabaptist movement arose.

In his later life, Hernando settled down and built his house and perfected his library. His garden was an arboretum containing plants and trees from across the world.

Hernando's achievement was remarkable. His goal to order all human knowledge for accessible retrieval was monumental. But after his death, most of his work and library were lost to neglect and time.

Through the life of one man, The Catalogue of Shipwrecked Books gave me a panoramic view of the 16th c., an overview of the life and achievements of Christopher Columbus, and a biography of his son Hernando.

I received a free ebook from the publisher through NetGalley in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
  • Intriguing history
  • I just thought it was a difficult read. I got about a quarter of the way thru and had to put it down. I was falling asleep on the train ride home. I may pick it back up again to see if it gets any better.
  • I quit after 103 pages of Christopher Columbus' voyages. Still wondering about the books of his bastard son as per the book description. Returned this loser.

Fairy Tail 53 German Edition eBook Hiro Mashima Gandalf Bartholomäus Reviews

  • The only reason I am giving this one star is because the bottom 1/4 of the pages are cut off on every chapter. I am disappointed on the fact of this and wish it would be updated. I love the book and this series and it would be five stars if not for this issue. I just would like to have the full book that I paid for.
  • Fairy Tail to me is basically Dragon Ball Z on a smaller scale with wizards, more important female characters, and less memorable villains. The reason I think this is because the story is pretty basic, but works well. However the story takes a back seat to action and fan service. Having said that, I love DBZ and wizards! And when you have female characters that actually do something and are really cool not just side characters! I'm sold! Great action, some of the best character interaction in manga, and cool females who aren't overshadowed by the males, great stuff. This volume finishes up the tower arc.
  • My son is really into graphic novels and had been stuck in his Naruto & Inuyasha books so I suggested to try another series to see if he might like them as well, couldn't hurt, right? He is addicted to the Fairy Tail series and carries at least two of the books with him at all times....Well worth the money and the wait.
  • Hiro Mashima does a wonderful job telling a standalone story that hits you right in the feels. This is the only Fairy Tail spinoff series that is both canon and worth reading!
  • Bought this for my die hard FT fan. He absolutely loves it!!!!! He hasnt stopped thanking me in a week since i bought this gift. He says its a very great read for anyone who loves the anime
  • The package came in perfect condition! But the company had to send me a 2nd package since the 1st failed to so. It's still awesome!! No scratches or rips on it. I would most definitely order another FT manga again!
  • Daughter loves loves loves! Slowly collecting them. Highly recommended! Fast shipping! Thank you.
  • Great if you love Fairy Tail! Just a manga about the guild's founding masters. Can't wait until Fairy Tail comes back

A bioethicist’s eloquent and riveting memoir of opioid dependence and withdrawal—a harrowing personal reckoning and clarion call for change not only for government but medicine itself, revealing the lack of crucial resources and structures to handle this insidious nationwide epidemic.

Travis Rieder’s terrifying journey down the rabbit hole of opioid dependence began with a motorcycle accident in 2015. Enduring half a dozen surgeries, the drugs he received were both miraculous and essential to his recovery. But his most profound suffering came several months later when he went into acute opioid withdrawal while following his physician’s orders. Over the course of four excruciating weeks, Rieder learned what it means to be “dope sick”—the physical and mental agony caused by opioid dependence. Clueless how to manage his opioid taper, Travis’s doctors suggested he go back on the drugs and try again later. Yet returning to pills out of fear of withdrawal is one route to full-blown addiction. Instead, Rieder continued the painful process of weaning himself.

Rieder’s experience exposes a dark secret of American pain management a healthcare system so conflicted about opioids, and so inept at managing them, that the crisis currently facing us is both unsurprising and inevitable. As he recounts his story, Rieder provides a fascinating look at the history of these drugs first invented in the 1800s, changing attitudes about pain management over the following decades, and the implementation of the pain scale at the beginning of the twenty-first century. He explores both the science of addiction and the systemic and cultural barriers we must overcome if we are to address the problem effectively in the contemporary American healthcare system.

In Pain is not only a gripping personal account of dependence, but a groundbreaking exploration of the intractable causes of America’s opioid problem and their implications for resolving the crisis. Rieder makes clear that the opioid crisis exists against a backdrop of real, debilitating pain—and that anyone can fall victim to this epidemic.
